As every homeowner knows, winters are particularly tough on driveways and paved surfaces; in fact, this is the time of year when the most damage is done to them. Ice formation causes cracks in unsealed surfaces, and driveways may take even further damage from snow plow use. As a result, many resort to the use of de-icer salts, but, unfortunately, some types can also cause significant damage. According to the experts at commercial paver Beausoleil & Sons Inc. of Craston, Rhode Island, there are four major types, each with a different effect on driveways and pavement.

So, what are these kinds and which one is the best for your driveway? Let’s take a look:

  • Sodium Chloride (Rock Salt): This is often the cheapest option and it’s very efficient in melting snow and ice; however, it’s also noted to be very damaging and corrosive to paved or asphalt surfaces.
  • Magnesium Chloride: This will melt snow and ice in temperatures as low as -13 degrees. It’s an excellent option as it works quickly and doesn’t do as much damage to the driveway.
  • Calcium Chloride: This type is a true workhorse; it’ll keep melting snow and ice even when the temperature drops to a staggering -25 degrees. It tends to leave a slime as it melts, however, and is known to be on the more corrosive side.
  • Potassium Chloride: This is the most expensive de-icing element, but if mixed with sodium chloride (equal parts of both), it works efficiently and is not very damaging to the surface.

At the end of the day, the contractors at Beausoleil & Sons Inc. note that no matter which one you use, your driveway will inevitably take on some damage during the cold months. That said, when it comes time to get repairs or repaving work done, this is a great company to go with; they are committed to providing the best in affordable service at no detriment to quality of work.
