Trees are a vital part of the ecosystem and a valuable addition to any landscape. Unfortunately, like any plant, they are susceptible to disease and insect infestations. H & K Tree Service in Hamburg, AR, specializes in residential and commercial tree services that eliminate environmental threats and encourage healthy growth. Below, they share details about five insects that are known to destroy wood and put trees at risk.

Southern Pine Beetle

The southern pine beetle is notorious throughout the South for damaging pine forests. During periodic outbreaks, their population grows exponentially in a brief period, and they kill numerous trees. In fact, estimated annual losses can exceed 100 million board feet of saw timber and 20 million cubic feet of growing stock during an outbreak. They kill all types of pine, though they prefer loblolly, Virginia, pond, pitch, and shortleaf varieties.

Pine Reproduction Weevils

commercial tree service Hamburg ARPitch-eating and pales weevils destroy pine seedlings throughout the Eastern United States. In the South, they can be found anywhere there are pines. Adults of both species are attracted to freshly harvested trees, including logging slash, stumps, and root systems. Adults also feed on the bark of new seedlings. According to commercial tree service experts, these pests are so prevalent, they regularly account for 30 to 60% of deaths of first-year seedlings in the South.

Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer is an invasive species originally from Asia. It was first discovered killing ash trees in Michigan in 2002 and has since spread throughout the East Coast and Midwest. Adults cause less damage than larvae, which feed on the tree’s inner bark. Stressed ash trees are most vulnerable, but even healthy ones can die from an infestation.

Formosan Subterranean Termite

The Formosan subterranean termite is one of the most widely distributed and destructive pests in the world. Within the United States, outbreaks are common throughout the South, as well as in Hawaii and California. These termites form large colonies, which allows them to cause extensive structural damage quickly. These pests infest trees as well as wooden structures like houses and barns.

Red Imported Fire Ant

Red imported fire ants are another invasive species; this one was accidentally introduced to the U.S. from South America and is most prevalent in southern Arkansas. Most northern counties have instituted a quarantine to keep the insects from spreading. These aggressive, reddish-brown ants build large nests resembling mounds of soil. These structures are usually found in open, sunny areas, including parks and athletic fields, though some are built around tree trunks and stumps or near buildings.
