Pediatric Dental Group has been dedicated to children's dental hygiene since 1966. Serving Lihue and Honolulu, the two offices provide teeth cleanings, exams, fluoride treatments, sealants, and digital X-rays. Dentists for kids specialize not only in oral care and good dental hygiene, but also in making sure children and parents feel comfortable, safe, and well taken care of.

Even for children, X-rays are common and important in ensuring the best dental health and maintenance. Dentists take X-rays for the following reasons:

  • To get a full view of the teeth. Teeth are bone that continue under the gums. The health of the teeth below the gums is just as important as above, if not more.
  • To look for decay. Decay is not always visible and can occur in between teeth, where it's not possible to see directly.
  • To check for any bone loss under the gums. Bone loss is associated with gum disease, and an X-ray will show how extensive the damage is.
  • To make sure no decay is forming under a filling. Decay under a filling cannot be seen any other way.
  • To exam teeth before procedures. Dentists must always look at teeth before removing teeth or putting in implants (in adults).

X-rays will not be done at every visit. However, children need them every 6-12 months—more often if the teeth are prone to decay or there is a history of decay—to ensure there is no active tooth decay below the gum line or deep between the teeth. These are the spots dentists cannot see with the naked eye.
