As you age, your skin grows thinner, making it dry out more easily. The problem of dry skin is even worse in the wintertime, when both the bite of frigid air outside and the warmth of heated indoor air can leech moisture right out of your skin. For seniors, the season often results in infuriating rashes, flaking skin, and itching outbreaks.

Visiting Angels, a national network of home care providers with a location in Toms River, NJ, recommends these skin care tips to get you through the winter:

  • Moisturizing is always important, but it is crucial in the winter. Your usual lotion may be sufficient, but when it’s cold you might need a heavier ointment or cream. Be sure to check the label and choose one that does not contain lanolin, which many seniors are allergic to. To help prevent evaporation, cover your skin with clothing immediately after moisturizing.
  • Drink plenty of water, even in winter. Dehydration dries your skin out from the inside.
  • Protect your skin by covering up as much as possible when you go outside.
  • Even when it’s cold, the sun can still dry out and damage your skin. Remember to use sunscreen, especially when there is snow on the ground.
  • As tempting as long, hot showers and baths may be, keep them short, and turn the temperature down. The harsh, hot water strips moisture out of your skin just as quickly as the cold wind outside.
