Keeping portions under control can be challenging, especially when the serving sizes seem unrealistic.  Follow these 3 rules below to master portions while losing weight.

Rule #1 – Don’t ignore the label. In fact always look at the serving size first. Then determine if you plan to have more than one serving. Ice cream for example is often listed as ½ cup serving size on the food label. That is probably not realistic for most people, so make sure to double those calories for a cup and see if it’s in fact a choice you want to make.

Rule #2 – Get out the measuring cups. If you consume cereal or pasta on a regular basis try this method. It can be very eye-opening on what fits in our bowl.

Rule #3 – Always portion food on to a separate plate. For example, place chips, dips, or pretzels onto your plate first. This will give you an idea of the serving visually and is easier to calculate than eating directly from the container.

Don’t forget to wait 20 minutes before reaching for a second helping…. you might decide you are satisfied without it.  Practice these rules to master the art of portion control.
