The winter freeze is upon us, which means it’s time to dig out the heavy coats and weather-strip the doors. But while you’re winterizing your home, don’t neglect the pipes! Cold weather can cause leaking or burst pipes, which require expensive plumbing repairs.

Joe Klosterman Plumbing, Inc., certified master plumbers serving the Cincinnati area, offer the following tips for ensuring your pipes survive the winter:

  1. Without proper insulation, the water in your pipes can freeze. Even if you notice the problem immediately, burst pipes can still cause a huge amount of water damage, destroying floors, walls, and personal belongings. Luckily, this disaster is preventable with insulation purchased at any major hardware store.
  2. Fix any leaks or drips immediately. Winter is especially hard on your plumbing, so small problems can grow into major repairs if left on their own
  3. If left outside, water in outdoor hoses can freeze, which will eventually freeze water in the faucet and pipes. Disconnect the hose and stow it away until spring, when you’ll need it again.
  4. If possible, shut off the outdoor faucet as well
