Hale Makua Health Services in Kahului, HI, recently received a donation from the Atherton Family Foundation and Hilton and Maria Acacia Unemori Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation to establish a new nurse’s aide training program. It is one of just four state-certified ones on Maui. Hale Makua Health Services has been one of the island’s most trusted long-term care providers since 1946. Throughout the decades, they’ve remained steadfast in their dedication to providing qualified, compassionate care to elders and their families.

A Simple Guide to a Long-Term Care Facility’s New Nurse’s Aide Program

What Is the Nurse’s Aide Program?

The Hale Makua Health Services nurse’s aide program is designed to train individuals to become certified nursing assistants (CNAs). The first class began July 7 and took place over four weeks, with 35 classroom hours and 77 clinical hours. After completing the coursework, students will take a practice CNA exam to prepare them for the official one.

To become certified, students must pass a rigorous exam regulated by a certifying agency. In Hawaii, these exams are administered by the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and Prometric. Furthermore, CNAs must complete at least 12 hours of training every year to keep their certification active.

long term careCNAs provide basic health care to patients and help them with daily activities they struggle to do independently, such as bathing and dressing. CNAs work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). CNAs are critical staff in long-term care and assisted living facilities. They and their supervisors are the only staff permitted to administer certain types of medication and help patients with particular functions.

How Will It Benefit the Community?

CNAs are integral to the community, providing compassionate, quality care to seniors and their families. Maui long-term care providers have experienced a CNA shortage in the past year and are in dire need of new employees. This program will alleviate immediate staffing concerns. It will also prepare the community for an estimated 53% increase in the senior population by 2020.

The program also benefits students, who will receive their education and materials free of charge. A career as a nurse’s assistant is a respectable and rewarding one. Graduates of this program will have the opportunity to enter the workforce immediately.

Hale Makua Health Services’ nurse’s aide program is just one of its many offerings.
