Psoriasis is a skin disorder characterized by red patches and silvery white scales. While it often improves through treatment from a dermatologist, some patients with other varieties of the condition may not know they have it. Heibel Dermatology in Lincoln, NE, provides psoriasis treatment for patients with plaque psoriasis, other forms of psoriasis, and all skin disorders.

Dermatologist’s Guide to Psoriasis

Causes of Psoriasis

DermatologistAccording to dermatologists, the development of psoriasis is influenced by a person’s immune system. Certain types of white blood cells, called T cells, are mistakenly activated by the body, causing skin cells to mobilize and grow within days instead of weeks. This forms an excess buildup of skin cells, which we call psoriasis.

Types of Psoriasis

Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of the disorder and affects up to 80% of diagnosed patients. Patches of red, raised skin covered by silvery white scales are often present on the elbows, knees, or lower back — though they can occur anywhere on the body. Other types of psoriasis include pustular, which appear on the palms and soles of the feet, inverse —in the folds of the skin — and guttate — red spots on the skin. Erythrodermic is the least common form of the disease, presenting itself over the entire body.

Psoriasis Treatments

Patients are diagnosed with psoriasis through a skin examination. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment is prescribed depending on the type of psoriasis present. Topical prescription medications may be recommended, which include corticosteroids, retinoids, and anthralin. Natural coal tar, laser therapy, UV light treatments, PUVA, systemic medicine, and biologics may also be prescribed, depending on the type and severity of the condition.
