Cafes, libraries, and even some restaurants all have one feature in common: Wi-Fi. Many people use these public connections every day, but if you're one of them, how can you be sure you're doing everything you can to protect your personal information? As TruVista, a cable and telephone company serving South Carolina and Georgia, explains, practicing safe habits with public connections is important. Here, they've put together some quick tips to help you stay secure.

3 Safety Tips When Using Public Wi-Fi

1. Only Have It on When You’re Using It

If you turn off the Wi-Fi connection when you aren't using it, you'll take great strides in improving your security. Nobody else will be able to connect to your computer, keeping out any potential data thieves. To do this on a Mac®, simply click the wireless icon on the menu bar at the top; then, click “Turn Off Wi-Fi.” On a PC the wireless icon will be in the taskbar, usually at the bottom of the screen.

2. Turn Off Sharing

Wi-FiIf you decide you do need access to the internet, it's a good idea to turn off the sharing feature, preventing others from being able to connect their device to yours. For example, when you're at home, you likely connect your computer wirelessly to a printer, phone, or other device. However, in a public space, this feature is unnecessary, as you won’t need to share any files with your at-home printer. Plus, the feature can open you up to thieves, so protect yourself by turning it off.

3. Consider a VPN

A virtual private network (or VPN) is another great way to protect yourself. This service allows you to secure your information with the use of a safe, private network, even though you are also using a public connection. These networks are used often by corporations, which have plenty of sensitive information to protect, indicating how useful they can be. If you find yourself feeling insecure on a public network, a VPN may be the best solution.

Whether you love to write in cafes or conduct research in libraries, public Wi-Fi networks are extremely convenient. However, they can also pose many threats. If you follow these tips, you can protect yourself and your personal data. If you have any questions, feel free to call TruVista at (803) 385-2191, or check out their services online.
