You probably have at least one bad driving habit, even if you aren’t aware of it. Because of this, Eaton Driving School in Rochester, NY, offers advice to experienced drivers, as well as new ones, behind the wheel. Their experienced instructors have compiled a list of some of the most common bad habits they see on the road and how to put the brakes on them.

5 Common Bad Driving Habits

1. Not Signaling

Too many drivers will merge and make turns without using their vehicle’s turn signals to warn other drivers. To be safe and obey New York state law, drivers should use their turn signal at least 100 feet before turning or changing lanes.

2. Following Too Closely

drivingSome drivers follow too closely to the car in front of them, which is also referred to as tailgating. This can cause an unnecessary collision if the car in front has to stop suddenly. Keep at least one car-length of space between you and other cars to avoid this.

3. Aggressive Driving

This includes intentional tailgating, speeding, and passing on shoulders — all of which can easily lead to an accident. Allow yourself more time to get to your destination, and avoid getting behind the wheel when you’re angry.

4. Being Distracted

New York law prohibits texting and driving, but some motorists do it anyway. Others don’t get enough sleep and drive drowsy or simply don’t focus on the road because they’re too busy thinking of something else. Always put your phone away and concentrate.

5. Going Under the Speed Limit

Some drivers will merge into a left lane of traffic without going the speed limit, causing other drivers to pass them in right lanes. Going too slowly can be as dangerous as speeding, so always adhere to the speed limit.
