The Georgia Lottery Pre-K program is a state-lottery-funded educational system geared toward preparing young children for kindergarten. It’s exceptionally popular and completely free. Cherokee Academy at Clayton in Canton, GA, is one of several early childhood education centers that offer the program. Here, the staff explains the eligibility requirements and the registration process.

Who Is Eligible?

All Georgia residents who are four years old by September 1 of the school year may qualify. There are no admissions tests or income requirements. However, you must present proof of age and residency. For the former, a birth certificate, hospital birth record, legal document, passport, or another official document from another country will suffice. Proof of residency may be a property tax notice, mortgage statement, current lease, homeowners insurance bill, current vehicle registration form, utility bill, or a letter from a shelter or employer if they provide housing.

When Should You Register?

Families are encouraged to register as soon as possible. The Georgia Lottery Pre-K is popular, and space is limited, so students are admitted on a first come, first served basis. Most classrooms fill up by the end of summer, if not sooner. Children who are already enrolled at Cherokee Academy at Clayton receive priority enrollment in the school’s pre-K program. If your child isn’t already a student, enrollment opens to the public March 1.
