Children are always on the move — playing, exploring, and learning. As a parent, you know establishing a consistent dental routine is an important part of overall health, but oral hygiene isn’t something kids think about on a daily basis. So what can you do to keep your child’s teeth clean and cavity-free?

Kid’s Dental Care: 5 Oral Hygiene Tips

1. Inspect Infant Teeth

It’s best to begin dental care when the first tooth erupts around six months of age. Examine your infant’s teeth and gums, wiping them often with a clean, moist cloth. Also, look for signs of bottle decay, which can occur when the sugars in milk or formula attack the teeth, forming plaque and cavities. Early signs include dull spots — which are whiter than the tooth itself — and lines. To prevent this condition, don’t allow children to sleep with a bottle full of formula; use water instead. Don’t share bacteria-laden utensils with your baby, and monitor pacifier use.

A child should have his or her first teeth cleaning and dental visit around the age of one. During this appointment, the dentist will examine and clean your child’s teeth, checking for cavities and offering some oral hygiene tips. Consistent visits help children feel more comfortable in the dentist’s chair and ease anxiety.

3. Protect Primary Teeth

Baby teeth allow your child to chew and speak properly, laying the foundation for the development of permanent teeth. Protecting them is important! As your child grows, show them how to gently brush and floss and continue biannual dental visits. The oral hygiene habits your child develops now will determine their dental health later in life.

4. Consider Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that repairs weakened enamel and makes teeth more resistant to decay. Many cities have fluoridated tap water, and you’ll find it in numerous toothpaste brands as well. If you’re concerned your child is not getting enough, talk to your dentist about fluoride treatments.

5. Maintain a Healthy Diet

Diet also plays a big role in dental health. Avoid allowing your children to consume packaged, processed snacks high in sugar. Instead, encourage them to eat fresh vegetables, fruits, yogurt, and cheese, all of which promote good oral hygiene.
