Dental implants are a wonderful option for restoring missing teeth. Not only do they look like natural teeth, but they also function the same way. Jeanne Rowland, DDS, has been improving smiles in Milton, WI, for 20 years with this cosmetic dentistry procedure. If you’re getting dental implants, the dentist wants you to understand the process so you feel at ease.

4 Steps to Getting Dental Implants

1. Evaluation

dental implantsIf you have a missing or damaged tooth, the first step is to make an appointment with your dentist for an examination. Not everyone can receive an implant because the process requires sufficient bone structure and good oral health. Before you can get an implant, you may also need a tooth extraction.

2. Setting of Dental Implant

During the next appointment, your dentist will insert the titanium implant into your jaw in the location of the missing tooth. This procedure can take some time and is done under anesthesia. The surgical site will then be cleaned and covered with gauze for at least an hour.

3. Healing Time

Inserting an implant into your jawbone is an oral surgery that requires some recovery time. For the first few days, you may need to take pain medication and stick to eating soft foods. Over time, your bones will heal around your implant, firmly anchoring it in your mouth.

4. Tooth Restoration

Once the healing process is complete, your dentist will check the implant for structural integrity. At this point, your teeth restoration can begin. For one missing tooth, you will get a crown, but implants can also be used in combination with dental bridges and dentures.
