Gulf Shores is one of Alabama’s most treasured tourist destinations. Featuring gorgeous white-sand beaches and crisp, clear waters, it’s the perfect getaway for relaxing and enjoying leisure activities. In addition to attractions like nature trails and championship golf tournaments, Gulf Shores also has many famous scuba diving sites.

So the next time you stay at your favorite beachfront vacation rental, consider going out for an adventure at one of these popular diving spots:

  • vacation rentalsThe Whiskey Wreck: This famous shore dive lays just beyond an offshore sandbar and is so named because it features a 200-foot rum runner boat. You don’t even have to be a professional scuba diver to enjoy this fantastic sight: The depth (about 20 feet below the surface) is shallow enough for non-divers and snorkelers. Night dives are also popular here.

  • LuLu Artificial Reef: First deployed in 2013, the LuLu is the one of the attempts of the Alabama Gulf Coast Reef Restoration Foundation at attracting fish and other marine life to local waters, which are mostly devoid of natural reefs. It’s not just the fish that are interested, of course—this incredible sight is also popular with scuba divers. If you’re staying at a nearby beachfront vacation rental, be sure to have a look.

  • Rome: It may not be the actual city of Rome, but this shore dive earned the name because of its standing columns, which resemble ancient Roman ruins. (In reality, “Rome” is the remains of the old Perdido Pass bridge.) Divers also enjoy the sight of angelfish, amberjack, snapper, grouper, and other tropical fish that call this shore dive home.
