Landscaping is a continuous work in progress, whether you’re adding a new flower bed or rearranging items in the yard. If you’re attempting the latter, it can be tricky: How, exactly, do you remove an established plant and replant it in an ideal location? Luckily, Ideal Supplies in Covington, KY, has all the landscape supplies you need, and they share these tips so you can rearrange your garden with confidence.

Best Landscape Supplies & Tips to Revitalize Your Garden

Assemble Supplies

landscape suppliesBefore you start digging, make sure you have all the necessary landscape supplies. At a minimum, you’ll need pruning shears, clippers, and a shovel. A wheelbarrow is also helpful, depending on the size and quantity of plants you are moving. If you are removing a number of plants and expect you’ll have to kneel for a while, a kneeling pad can protect your joints from those after-gardening aches and pains.

Remove & Replant

To remove a plant, dig straight down about two to three feet around the base. Don’t dig too close to the main root stem, which can damage the plant. You want to remove as much soil as possible so you can see where the root system goes. Slip the shovel underneath each big root and gently pull up to loosen. If there are stubborn roots, you may have to trim those back with the clippers—but do so with care. You don’t want to shock the plant.

Finally, slip the shovel underneath the main root and, using the same gentle rocking motion, wiggle the entire plant free. The plant should lift freely from the soil, and you can then replant it in its new location.

Water & Mulch

When you move a plant to a new location, you’ll want to give it as much TLC as possible to ease any stress. Water it frequently so that the soil remains moist to the touch. Mulch around the plants. Soil loses nearly 80% of its moisture content throughout the day. Mulch helps it retain the majority of that moisture, keeping your plants happy and healthy.
