If you are new to partial dentures, you might be wondering how to protect your investment, dental health, and free time. Fortunately, denture care is simple and convenient if you know what to watch out for. Here are three great tips for taking care of partial dentures.

Watch out for Abrasives

Your new partial dentures are made from a mix of special plastics, metals, and porcelain composites that are designed to mimic the natural look of your teeth. Unfortunately, these materials are susceptible to damage just like the rest of your teeth, which is why you should avoid brushing your partials with toothpastes that contain abrasives. Before you use a new toothpaste, squeeze a little between your fingers to check for small grains. These abrasives can scratch the surface of your partials, causing discoloration, sheen changes, and even bad breath.

Handle Over Soft Surfaces

partial denturesOne of the most common causes of partial denture damage is people dropping their oral appliances during cleaning, which is why you should always handle your partials over a soft surface. If you like to brush your dentures in the bathroom, place a large towel or soft mat over the counter where you are working in case you drop the dentures.

Soak Overnight

If you aren’t careful, your partial dentures can dry out and warp, making them hard to use in the future. To help them to maintain their shape, soak your dentures overnight in clean water or a solution designed to sanitize oral appliances. Check to make sure that whatever solution you use is safe for the kind of partial dentures you have.
