If you’ve ever contacted an infertility clinic to ask about in vitro fertilization, you may have been presented with two options: a natural IVF cycle or a mini IVF cycle. Although both have their pros and cons, unless you have some familiarity with infertility treatments, you may not understand the difference between the two.

The following guide should provide the information you need to start making an informed decision, but always make sure you’ve discussed these issues thoroughly with the professionals at an infertility clinic before choosing which method you’d prefer.

Mini IVF Cycle

In vitro fertilization can be a difficult process, as it requires specialists to carefully monitor and assess when your body has produced healthy, viable eggs. With a Mini IVF cycle, doctors provide a small amount of medication which serves to stimulate egg production.  This protocol may be assigned to you based on your medical history and current infertility diagnosis.

Natural IVF Cycle

A Natural Cycle IVF procedure avoids the use of expensive ovarian stimulation drugs and their associated cost. With natural Cycle IVF, the risks of ovarian hyperstimulation, multiple pregnancy, and the issues of cryopreserved extra embryos are avoided as only one egg is typically retrieved.

However, a natural cycle IVF cycle has its own set of disadvantages. For example, by not using fertility drugs, unexpected premature “LH surging” or ovulation can occur, leading to cancellation of the planned egg retrieval. Also, because only one egg and possibly one embryo are produced, the chances for pregnancy are less than with conventional IVF when two or more embryos are transferred.

At Pacific In Vitro Fertilization Institute, serving Honolulu, HI, since 1985, you’ll be in the hands of experienced professionals who can help you better understand the pros and cons of each option. Contact them online for more information or call (808) 946-2226.
