Many people cringe in fear when their dentist recommends a root canal to repair a damaged tooth. Although the term may conjure graphic mental images, this procedure is just an in-depth dental filling to protect the tooth and relieve severe dental pain. Here is a little more information about root canals and reasons your dentist might recommend the procedure.

Understanding Root Canals

What Is It?

root canalDuring a root canal, your dentist will carefully numb the affected area with a local anesthetic and then create an opening in the biting surface of the tooth to access the inner pulp chamber. Once inside, your dentist will remove the nerves and blood vessels inside of the tooth to relieve pressure and pain. Because infection can sometimes cause problems within the tooth, small dental files are used to access and clean the dental roots.

After the tooth interior is sanitized with an antiseptic solution, the tooth is filled with a rubber compound called gutta percha, and then a large filling is used to seal the access point. Root canals are essentially a way to mummify the tooth while protecting the natural root, so teeth can become brittle or discolored after the procedure. For this reason, your dentist will want to top the tooth with a full dental crown.

Why Would You Need One?

Root canals are typically recommended anytime a tooth is severely infected or injured. Patients who need root canals often experience dental pain, sensitivity, or discoloration, and may also have problems with gum tenderness, swelling, and abscesses in the area around the tooth. Removing the pulp and nerves inside the tooth eliminates dental pain, and taking care of the infection helps to ward off problems such as tooth and bone loss.
