LASIK® is an incredibly popular procedure for treating refractive errors, but not everyone is a good candidate for the surgery. If you currently rely on corrective eyewear to see but you want to learn more about the various surgical options for restoring your vision, contact Wing Eyecare. After conducting a thorough eye exam, an eye doctor on their team will help you explore your choices, which might include LASIK or one of its alternatives.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is one of the most popular alternatives to LASIK, and it works in much the same way, although there are a few notable differences. For example, instead of creating a corneal flap like the LASIK procedure, PRK actually removes the whole outer layer. As a result, the healing process for PRK is longer than it is for LASIK because the corneal layer must actually grow back; however, the results are similar.

Another popular and effective eye doctoralternative to LASIK is LASEK, which is less invasive than PRK. During the LASEK procedure, an eye doctor creates a small hole on the corneal surface to prepare the eye for LASIK. The section of the cornea that is affected essentially works as a cap and is “replaced” after the surgery to facilitate healing.

If your eye doctor determines you are not a good candidate for LASIK because you suffer from dry eyes or have especially thin corneas, you may still be eligible for photorefractive keratectomy or LASEK. Both procedures provide results of the same quality as LASIK.
