Oil leaks can be extremely bad for your car, but they’re not great for your driveway, either. Those unsightly stains can seem impossible to get rid of and sink deeper into the concrete over time if they go untreated. Fortunately, the auto mechanics at Brothers Tire Sales in Kannapolis, NC, know a few things about oil stains, so they’d like to offer some tips for getting them out of your driveway for good.

5 Ways to Remove Driveway Oil Stains

1. Apply Oven Cleaner

auto mechanicSaturate the stain with any commercially available oven cleaner and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Once the cleaner has had a chance to work, start scrubbing with a steel brush and keep at it until you see the stain disappear. However, oil has a way of coming back, so you might have to repeat the process to completely get rid of it.

2. Use Soap or Detergent

Any soap in hot water will do the trick, as long as you scrub hard enough. Work at it with a steel brush and rinse with hot water, repeating the process until the stain is gone.

3. Clean With Cola

Small stains or oil spots can sometimes be removed with a can of cola, as long as your driveway doesn’t have a slope. Pour some cola on the stain right before bed and just rinse it away in the morning.

4. Spray WD-40

Auto mechanics know that WD-40 has an almost endless variety of uses, including removing small oil stains from your driveway. Just spray the spot at night, and you should be able to rinse away the worst of the oil stain in the morning.

5. Cover With Baking Soda

Use enough baking soda to completely cover the stain, then start scrubbing. As you work, the baking soda should start to turn black as it draws oil from the concrete. After half an hour, rinse it away with a hose and the stain should be gone. However, you may need to repeat the process for best results.
