Almost every state requires motorists to carry some amount of liability coverage as part of an auto insurance policy. However, many people are unsure of what this means or how much they need to comply with state minimums. In general, liability coverage is comprised of three components: property damage liability, bodily injury damage per passenger, and bodily injury damage per accident. Ohio Insurance Center Agency, the most experienced and reliable insurance agency in Cincinnati, OH, explains what each one is in the sections below.

Property Damage Liability

auto insuranceProperty damage liability coverage pays for damages you inflict on other people's property while operating a vehicle if an accident is deemed your fault. In the Tri-state area, the requirements for property damage coverage as part of an auto insurance policy are as follows: Ohio and Indiana, $25,000 minimum; Kentucky, $10,000 minimum. You are responsible for any damages beyond those amounts.

Bodily Injury Liability Per Person

Bodily injury liability coverage pays for the doctor's care, hospital stays, ambulance trips, and other medical treatments required should you injure someone in an accident if you are at fault. All three states in the Cincinnati Tri-state area require at least $25,000 per person. This means your insurer will pay up to $25,000 to treat the injuries of each injured individual, up to the "per accident" maximum. This does not cover the injuries of you or your passengers, only pedestrians and passengers of other vehicles.

Bodily Injury Liability Per Accident

The "per accident" maximum is the total amount your insurer will cover for all injuries sustained in a particular incident. In Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, you are required to purchase at least $50,000 in "per accident" liability coverage. You are responsible for amounts beyond what your auto insurance covers. Also, if you are sued for damages arising from an auto accident, your liability insurance pays for lawyer fees, court costs, settlement amounts, and judgments up to your policy limit.
