If your child is getting ready to attend kindergarten this year, there are a list of vaccinations they need to receive before they’re admitted to a Nebraska school. Children & Adolescent Clinic PC of Hastings, NE, reminds parents that proof of these vaccines are needed before your student enters the classroom. You can ensure that your child will start kindergarten safely and on time by checking that they have the following vaccinations on file at the pediatrician’s office.

Guide to Vaccinations Required Before Kindergarten

IPV

Hastings-VaccinationsInactive polio vaccines (IPV) protect against the polio virus. In all US states, three doses of IPV are given to children by the time that kindergarten begins. If your child is not caught up on their doses of IPV, they will have to finish the regimen before starting school in the fall.

DTaP

Doctors give DTaP vaccinations to all children under seven years of age to prevent diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis). This round of vaccines requires year total doses, including one given on or after their fourth birthday. This regimen also needs to be completed before starting kindergarten.

MMR

The MMR vaccine protects children against measles, mumps, and rubella. Your child will typically receive their first dose after 12 months of age and again after that. Check to determine the last round was finished and documented before school begins.

Varicella

Varicella is a vaccine to provide immunity against chickenpox, which can easily wreak havoc in kindergarten classrooms. This vaccination will also need to be completed by a pediatrician before the first day of class. If your child has already had chickenpox, they will not need the vaccine and instead will require proof that they were treated by a doctor.
