There are very few families that aren't looking for ways to help finance their child's college education. It's one of the largest financial investments a person will ever make, and getting help can take a huge load off parents' shoulders. Southeast Community College, in Nebraska, wants to share a few tips with you on how to get your child the on the right track to winning a college scholarship

3 Tips for Winning College Scholarships

1. Apply Widely

scholarshipStudents need not be selective when it comes to applying for scholarships. There is more than 3 billion dollars worth of private scholarships awarded each year, and students should apply to as many as they can to have the best chance to get a larger piece of the pie. Think of applying for scholarships as no different from the larger college application process: The fewer you apply to, the more you’re limiting your opportunities.

2. Use Your College Essays & Resume

Some students are intimidated by the idea that applying for scholarships will mean loads of extra work. But if you take the right savvy, discerning approach, you can significantly reduce the amount of extra work without limiting the number of scholarships you apply to. If your regular college application includes a resume and one or two essays, use those on scholarship applications. Even when prompts are different, resourceful students can find ways to use big portions of their application essays for multiple scholarships.

3. Search Local Scholarships

Most families know about the major national scholarships. Fewer, though, take the time to research local scholarships at the state and community levels. While these scholarships may be for less money, the competition is also usually much softer, with fewer applicants.
