If you're new to shooting, you might be overwhelmed by the ammunition selection at an ordinary gun shop. With a broad range of weights, calibers, shapes, and brands to choose from, how do you even know where to begin? Glauber's Sports in Carrollton, KY, offers a vast inventory of ammunition—as well as the knowledge to help you choose between them.

How to Choose Ammunition

1. Caliber

AmmunitionDifferent guns require different types of ammunition, and using the wrong size ammunition is extremely dangerous. To make an informed purchase, examine the data stamp engraved into the side of your barrel, and compare it to the information on the ammo box.

2. Shape

Ammunition comes in several shapes which affect the bullets’ performance and are associated with different applications. For target shooting, inexpensive full metal jacket rounds are ideal. For self-defense or hunting, choose hollow point bullets, which expand upon impact and do the most damage.

3. Weight

“Grain” is the measure of a bullet's weight. Lighter bullets move more quickly, while heavier ones tend to have more force on impact—although this depends on distance as well. Try starting with a weight at the middle of the available range, and adjust to heavier or lighter ammunition as necessary.

4. Manufacturing

Many gun owners have a favorite ammunition brand. The main distinction to look for is between factory ammunition—which is made entirely new—and remanufactured ammunition, which reuses spent brass casings. While factory ammunition is consistent in quality, remanufactured ammunition is less reliable, but also less expensive.

5. Test

When you've made a preliminary decision about the type of ammunition you want, don't just start stockpiling. Instead, buy a few rounds to test at the range. You may have to try out several types of ammunition before you find a perfect fit.
