How Do You Prepare?

Little preparation is needed for your first exam. All tests are painless and simple to perform. When you arrive at the office, greet the front desk staff and fill out paperwork about your medical history, just as you would at your primary care physician. If you have vision insurance, present your card at this time. Once you’re finished filling out forms, an optometry assistant will take you to an exam room to begin the first set of eye tests. 

How Will You Be Tested?

During the first round of eye tests, you will receive a color blindness and glaucoma test and, if necessary, a visual field test. Next, you’ll see the optometrist. They will greet you, tell you about their expertise, and begin their set of examinations. This will include asking you to read a standard eye chart and performing certain movements of the eye.

You may be asked to follow the eye doctor’s pen or a small light with your eyes. The doctor will also perform a simple slit lamp exam and pupil dilation exam, which evaluate the eye’s inner and outer structures. A refraction test and retinoscopy will be conducted to determine your prescription. This test consists of viewing your field of vision through different lenses and filters.

It is important to know before your exam that pupil dilation requires administering special eye drops. This liquid may blur your vision and cause sensitivity to light. Ask a friend or family member to pick you up from your exam so you don’t have to drive. Your vision will be affected for a few hours before returning to normal.
