That old adage, “An ounce of prevention leads to a pound of cure,” certainly applies to your home’s plumbing. A regimen of preventative measures can help ensure that everything is running properly, and that, should problems arise, you’re able to catch them before they cause extensive damage to your system or property.

As providers of plumbing repair, solar water heater installation, and a variety of home improvements to residents throughout the greater Honolulu area, the experienced contractors at Diamond Head Plumbing, Inc. note that most such measures are relatively simple and easy to apply.

So what are some of these measures? According to the folks at Diamond Head, here are four steps you can take:

  • Check for moisture: Check for moisture around the basin of the toilet and around the sink. A drop of red dye in the tank of a toilet can help you determine if the unit is leaking.
  • The water heater tank: If you have a gas heated water boiler system, you should drain approximately one gallon of water from it every three months to prevent the build-up of sediment.
  • Don’t use chemicals: When clearing a blocked drain, avoid using chemical agents which can be damaging to the pipes. These should be used as a last resort, and only as directed.
  • Work the main valve: It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the main water valve, which has the ability to shut down water to the whole house. Occasionally flipping it from the ‘on’ to the ‘off’ setting will ensure that it does not get stuck in one position. If you are away from home for more than a few days, you should set it to ‘off,' as this will minimize the impact of any unforeseen leaking.

Naturally, some issues will arise no matter what you do, which is why the plumbers and contractors at Diamond Head Plumbing, Inc. offer both emergency and standard repairs, in addition to a wide range of kitchen and bathroom remodeling services.
