It’s not always easy to know when someone is experiencing thoughts of suicide. That’s why the counselors at Families Inc., offering mental health services to clients throughout Arkansas, emphasize the importance of suicide prevention and awareness. By learning more about this issue, you’ll have a greater ability to help yourself or a loved one who is struggling with suicidal ideation.

Key points to remember include the following:

  • The Topic Shouldn’t Be Taboo: For many families, suicide feels like an “off-limits” topic. This prevents many people from seeking the help they need. If someone in your family is struggling with mental health issues, make sure they know they can talk to you, even if they are contemplating suicide. If you’re aware of the problem, you can help them find the right counselor.
  • CounselorsYou Should Be Familiar With the Available Resources: There are numerous resources available to people with suicidal thoughts. Research mental health services and suicide prevention hotlines in your area. You never know when you might need them.
  • You Should Never Judge: Mental health issues are real illnesses. A person who is struggling with depression or contemplating suicide is not weak. They’re simply a victim. Don’t judge them for what they are experiencing, and don’t judge yourself if you are going through a difficult time. Make sure you don’t fall prey to the notion that therapy is for people who can’t handle their own problems. Seeing a counselor is no different than seeking medical treatment.
