If you are over 40 years of age and experiencing vision loss, you are not alone. Millions of Americans suffer from conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma. While untreated cataracts can cause blindness, visiting an optician at the first sign of an eye problem can prevent vision loss.

cataractsA cataract is the clouding of an eye’s natural lens and occurs most commonly in older adults over 40. As a cataract begins to cover a lens, it can cause vision problems and, ultimately, blindness.

While subcapsular cataracts are found at the back of the lens and are common for patients with conditions like diabetes, nuclear cataracts form in the center of the lens and are associated with the effects of aging. Cortical cataracts start on the outside on the lens and work their way to the middle.

Some patients don’t notice they have a developing cataract until it has fully formed or they receive an eye exam. Those who do notice symptoms as their cataracts are developing may find their vision is blurry or cloudy, they are more sensitive to light, or they see more glare than before. Other warning signs include a temporary improvement in vision or the sudden dulling of bright colors.

In addition to aging and diabetes, conditions such as hypertension, obesity, myopia, and alcoholism can influence the potential development of cataracts. Patients who smoke, take steroid medications, are frequently exposed to UV light, or have a family history of cataracts are also at increased risk.

To help prevent cataracts, eat a diet rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids. Avoid excess UV exposure by wearing sunglasses when you are outside. You should also get regular eye exams so your optician can treat your cataracts in their early stages. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, call your eye doctor.
