Adorning each guest with a colorful lei will add flair to any special occasion. From braided strands to decorative knots, there are several versions available throughout Hawaii. According to the professionals at Pali Florist & Gift Shop in Kailua, HI, understanding your options will help you find something suitable for your event. The shop provides island residents with floral arrangements for a range of functions.

Below, they share a brief guide to five common leis found in Hawaii:

  • leiKui: This popular option resembles a necklace. To create the effect, flowers are pierced with a needle and held together with string. Because the petals are easy to stack on top of one another, plumeria flowers are often used.
  • Hili: Similar to traditional holiday garland, this lei is made with strands of vines or ferns instead of flowering plants. The chosen material is plaited together in three strands to create the desired effect. It is often worn as a headpiece during celebrations.
  • Hipu’u: A knotting method is used to create this lei. Resembling a daisy chain, stems are secured together with knots. So they aren’t visible, they are often tied closely to the flower petals.
  • Hilo: This intricate option is often made using ti leaves. The material is twisted together in a double-helix style to make two strands which are then twisted together.
  • Wili: Also made utilizing the twisting method, this flower lei uses raffia palms to hold flowering plants in place. Strands of raffia are coiled around the colorful flowers. Though, strips of paper are sometimes used instead of raffia.
