Every athlete and exercise enthusiast has had days where they didn’t know how they were going to power through another workout. When this happens, it’s essential to listen to your body and modify your plans. Is it time for an active recovery day? Or should you simply take a rest day instead? Before you can decide which is the best choice, you need to understand the difference between the two options. At Bombers CrossFit in Dayton, OH, our knowledgeable, certified trainers are available to answer any fitness questions our clients may have, so we can help them get the most out of their workouts.

certified trainersActive recovery is a technique used to help the body repair itself after intense workouts. On recovery days, you should remain active but perform low-impact exercises. This will help to improve flexibility, alleviate muscle soreness, and restore energy levels. Certified trainers suggest jogging, bike riding, or swimming on active recovery days.

On the other hand, rest days refer to time when you completely refrain from any form of exercise. While you don’t have to spend the entire day on the couch or in bed, the goal is to keep your heart rate down and get enough sleep to help your muscles recover. On these days, you might consider running errands, going to the movies, or just hanging out with friends.

Active recovery and rest days are both important to incorporate into any workout cycle. Your body will benefit from getting a break now and then, and it won’t undermine all the hard work you’ve done. Talk to your certified trainer to see how often rest and recovery should be part of your schedule.
