Over the course of your life, there may come a time when you will a lose a close friend or family member. When this occurs, you will likely attend a funeral or cremation service. This is never an easy task, and, if it is your first time, you may be uncertain of the expected decorum and etiquette. Although funeral services and practices may vary based on your culture and relationship with the deceased, there are some basic guidelines for behavior you should follow.

Proper Etiquette for a Funeral

1. Avoid Bringing Small Children

If at all possible, avoid bringing children under the age of 10 to a funeral. Younger children have a difficult time sitting still and may become restless during longer services. Exceptions can be made if the child was close to the deceased, but you should expect to leave children at home with a sitter that day.

2. Dress Appropriately

funeralNot every culture requires you to be fully in black for a funeral, but you should still dress appropriately. Avoid any bright colors or flashy clothing and steer clear of jeans and sneakers. If you are in doubt, dark-colored formal wear works best.

3. Send Flowers at a Different Time

Flowers are a great way to express your sympathy, but it may not be appropriate to bring a full bouquet to the funeral home yourself. Contact a florist before the service to send a wreath or arrangement, or send flowers directly to the home.

4. Only Speak Respectfully of the Deceased

At the funeral or memorial service, speak positively and respectfully of the deceased. Do not make any negative comments or discuss the manner in which the person may have passed, especially if it was a tragic accident. Instead, express your condolences to the family members and thank them for having you at the service.

5. Consider a Sympathy Note

In addition to verbally expressing your condolences, send a sympathy note to the family as well. This note—which can be sent alone or with a flower arrangement—adds a personal touch and will be greatly appreciated by the family.
