Root Canal Survival Guide: What to Expect & Aftercare Tips

What Is a Root Canal?

root-canalDentists perform this procedure on an infected—or abscessed—tooth. The treatment involves drilling a small hole, removing the infected pulp, cleaning the inside of the tooth and filling it with special material to prevent further infection.

What Can I Expect After the Treatment?

Your dentist will numb the area before performing a root canal, so you can expect a section of your mouth to feel numb for a few hours afterward. Do not eat or chew anything until that feeling wears off—otherwise, you might end up biting your lips or the inside of your cheeks. You may need to ice the area or take an over-the-counter painkiller for the first 24-48 hours. If your dentist has prescribed an antibiotic, don’t forget to take it. In some cases, your dentist will use a temporary filling, which will be replaced with a permanent material in a separate appointment.

How Do I Care for My Teeth Going Forward?

The area may feel tender for a few days after the treatment, so be careful not to put unnecessary pressure on the tooth. Brush and floss as you normally would, just be gentle around that area for a few days. If there is any excess pain, or you notice old symptoms returning, contact your dentist immediately.
