Automatic garage doors are a cherished convenience for many homeowners. So when they stop working during a power outage, some people are unsure of whether to call a maintenance specialist or an electrician. Fortunately, with the right know-how, homeowners can resolve the problem themselves.

Automatic Garage Door Repair Service, a longstanding garage door service based in Rochester, NY, explains how to open and close your door during power outages:

  • Check the Bypass Trigger: Most automatic garage doors are equipped with what's called a "bypass,” which is a mechanism disconnecting the door from the automatic system and allows it to be opened and closed manually. Bypass triggers often come in the form of a rope with a handle at the end. Simply pull it down for safety reasons while the door is closed, and you can start opening and closing it by hand.
  • Tuck Away the Bypass: Once you've pulled down on the bypass trigger rope, simply tuck away the rope in a safe place, and use your automatic garage door like a manual one. It's less convenient, but it's better than not accessing the garage at all.
  • Reconnect to Auto System: Once you regain power, you'll want to reconnect your garage doors to its automatic system. Do this by pressing the opener button, and then watching for the spring attachment to reconnect to the door. Once it does this, the automatic system is reestablished. If for any reason it doesn't, or you experience issues resuming the use of the automatic system when power is restored, consult a garage door service.
