You’ve probably heard your dentist or dental hygienist talk about the dangers of gum disease, but you might not understand just how serious the condition can be, or how it progresses. Gum disease is marked by the inflammation of the gums, and over time, it can affect the integrity of the underlying bone, too.

Here’s what you need to know about the three stages of gum disease and how you can prevent them:

  • gum diseaseGingivitis: This early stage features gum inflammation caused by plaque buildup. At this stage, bleeding when you brush or floss is common. The good news is, you can reverse gingivitis by practicing diligent oral hygiene at home and scheduling dental cleanings every six months.
  • Periodontitis: This is the beginning of irreversible damage to the bone and fibers that hold your teeth and gums in place. It’s imperative to prevent further damage at this stage by making dental health your highest priority.
  • Advanced Periodontitis: At this point, teeth begin to loosen because the bone and fibers holding them in place are damaged beyond repair. Visit your dentist immediately to begin treatment. Otherwise, you risk loosing your teeth.

Gum disease is unpleasant at every stage, and tooth loss is a significant consequence of inaction. Fortunately, you can prevent the process from starting by brushing twice daily and flossing once a day. Consider adding an American Dental Association-approved mouthwash to your routine, and visit your dentist for cleanings every six months. If you are high-risk because of smoking, diet, or genetics, ask your dentist about being evaluated by a periodontist once a year.
