During the hot and humid summer, you depend on your air conditioner practically every day. But have you ever paused to consider how this system works? As the home improvement professionals at Master Technicians & Mechanicals in Crossett, AR, explain, there’s no reason why the workings of your HVAC system should remain a mystery.

While there are many different types of air conditioners that might be used for a residential building (including central air conditioners, window units, and ductless systems), each of these systems uses similar components to keep your home comfortable.

For example, every air conditioner uses refrigerant to remove heat from your indoor air. When your thermostat causes your air conditioner to turn on, the compressor starts the cooling process by pumping the refrigerant through a copper loop. This heats it into a hot, high-pressure vapor.

air conditionerAfter this, the refrigerant travels to the condenser, where it is cooled by the condenser fan/coils and changes into a high-pressure liquid. This liquid then moves to the expansion valve, where it is forced through a tiny opening. When the refrigerant emerges on the other side of the opening as a low-pressure mist, it naturally cools as the gas components expand.

The low-pressure mist is then sent to the evaporator coil, where it meets the warm air from your home that has been carried through the air ducts. The refrigerant cools the air, which is then sent back out through the system’s return vents.

While this process may sound confusing and complex, it enables your air conditioner to provide cool air in a matter of seconds. You can have peace of mind knowing investing in standard maintenance and tuneups for your air conditioner will keep this entire process flowing smoothly.
