If you must undergo a drug screening, it is natural to feel nervous beforehand, even if you do not abuse any substances. Fortunately, the friendly health care team at Carolina Doctors Med Care in Sanford, North Carolina, will guide you through the procedure and answer any questions you have to ease your nerves. In the meantime, read on to learn what you can expect during the actual screening.

What You Can Expect From These 3 Drug Screenings

Urine Drug Testing

If you must take a urine drug screening, do not drink an excessive amount of water prior to the test because it will dilute the sample. Just drink the same amount of fluids you normally would. Once you arrive at the clinic, the physician will ask you to provide a sample within three minutes of entering a private bathroom and will instruct you not to flush the toilet after you are done.

If you need an express drug screening, the tester will test the urine immediately for drugs. Otherwise, the sample will be packaged for the lab, and you will typically receive the results within five business days.

Oral Fluid Drug Testingdrug screening

In this drug screening, you must first spit out any gum or tobacco. You will then provide a saliva sample into a special collection device. Much like a urine test, the results will be available the same day if you need an express test. Otherwise, you can expect to get them back within two to five business days.

Hair Drug Testing

You must be able to provide a hair sample that is approximately 1.5 inches long in order to take a hair drug screening. If your head is clean-shaven, the tester may take hair from your leg or armpit. A hair test requires 90-120 strands, and the tester will aim to cut them as close to the root as possible. Express drug testing is not possible for hair samples, you can expect to receive the results of your hair test within 10 business days.
