Chances are you’ve heard of asbestos: the harmful material found in insulation of older buildings that has been connected to cancer. Vermiculite is a lesser-known material that has a connection to asbestos, and if you’re concerned about the presence of either in your home or business, you’ll need to have it removed. Companies like Astech in Bridgeport, CT, have a team of professionals who quickly and safely remove these materials.

The Basics of Vermiculite & Asbestos

What Is Vermiculite?

vermiculiteVermiculite is a natural mineral composed of shiny flakes that look like mica. It is a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. This unique material expands under high heat up to 30 times its original size, which is called exfoliated vermiculite. When expanded, it becomes a light, fire-resistant, highly absorbent material that offers a wide range of uses. Some of its more common uses have included gardening, vehicle brakes, and insulation.

How Is It Related to Asbestos & Mesothelioma?

In the 1900s, a majority of all vermiculite (approximately 70%) sold in the United States came from a mine just outside of Libby, Montana. Much of the material from this mine was used for building insulation. It was later discovered that there was also a large deposit of asbestos in the same mine, meaning all materials that came out of the Libby mine may be contaminated. As a result, any buildings with vermiculite insulation should be considered contaminated with asbestos. When asbestos becomes disturbed, it releases harmful particles into the air. Such asbestos exposure has been linked with causing mesothelioma, a type of cancer.

If you have vermiculite insulation in your home, do not attempt to remove it yourself. Removal should be handled by a team of professionals with proper training and equipment. Astech offers asbestos testing to determine if you’re at risk, and can handle your asbestos removal for you quickly and safely.
