Although new toys hit the market every day, there are still plenty of retro items at your local toy store enjoyed by kids and adults alike. Below are a few products whose popularity has stood the test of time.

Five Classics at Your Local Toy Store

Rubik’s Cube®

This brain teaser debuted on store shelves in 1977 and has been a favorite ever since. Invented by Hungarian sculptor Erno Rubik, few have mastered the trick to get all colors to match on one, or all, sides—but it still boasts hours of fun nonetheless.

Etch A Sketch®

Although advanced technology makes it possible to doodle on a computer, tablet, or smartphone screens, people are still drawn to the venerable Etch A Sketch. The original freestyle drawing tool was devised in the 1950s by inventor and electrician Andre Cassagnes, using aluminum powder to create lines controlled by a stylus in the knobs.

Easy-Bake Oven®

toy storeBrought to market in 1963, this low-maintenance oven taught kids throughout the country how to make sweet treats. Today, youngsters still make cakes, cookies, and more baked goods in the popular toy, with more than 30 million sold in 2013 alone.

Play-Doh®

Created as a wallpaper cleaning agent in the 1930s, Play-Doh took on its current role as a beloved toy two decades later. Made of water, salt, and flour, kids and adults form abstract sculptures with the mixture, which comes in a variety of colors.

Slinky®

In the early 1940s, naval mechanical engineer Richard James was working on a project to create springs to secure nautical instruments in place. One fell off the shelf and “Slinked” around on the floor. James was captivated by the movement. Watching the compressed metal spring descend the stairs has continued to mesmerize people since.
