Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is an antibiotic liquid that prevents tooth decay and keeps cavities from worsening. It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a safe and effective product for dental patients of all ages, but dentists put particular emphasis on its benefits for children.

The primary ingredients in SDF are fluoride and silver. Fluoride is the active ingredient, limiting and preventing tooth decay, while silver strengthens the protective dentin layer of teeth. SDF is applied easily at a dentist’s office using a small brush and is allowed to set on tooth surfaces for a few minutes. Some dentists recommend avoiding eating and drinking for an hour after treatment.

Pediatric dentist Avon OHWhile the ideal way to treat tooth decay is to remove affected areas, this procedure is invasive and often expensive. Since silver diamine fluoride treatment is noninvasive, it frequently is preferred as an alternative to tooth fillings for young children. It also is favored by pediatric dentists because the process of applying it is painless and quick, and the product also relieves tooth sensitivity.

Studies show twice-annual applications of silver diamine fluoride are more effective than other minimally invasive options for addressing tooth decay and cavities. However, SDF isn’t a suitable option for everybody. Patients who have mouth sores or silver allergies shouldn’t undergo SDF treatment. A dentist can determine whether you are a suitable candidate.
