As part of your due diligence in searching for the best window treatment for your project, maintenance and care are important factors to consider.  Proper maintenance and care will prolong the life of the treatment and increase the value of your purchase.  Kreative Kama'aina Enterprises, the leading window treatment manufacturer in Honolulu, HI, has the following suggestions in maintaining your window treatments, specifically curtains and draperies.

The most important tip to remember in caring for your drapery is to read the care instructions carefully.  To minimize cleaning expenses, Kreative Kama'aina recommends the following tips.

Daily Care
Daily care of lined or unlined drapery panels are simple.  The simple task of having your drapes drawn daily will help in keeping your drapes looking good.  Just the movement of opening and closing your drapes help minimize dust, dirt, and pollen build up.

Monthly
Vacuuming every month or so will also help to keep them clean.  Light vacuuming and a soft brush attachment on the lowest setting is all that is needed.

Washing Draperies at Home or Professionally
Be sure to always check the care instructions on the label of the  drapery.  If washable, be sure to remove hooks, rings, and hardware prior to washing. (Please note that the care instructions may indicate that the fabric is washable but the stiffener or crinoline at the top of the drape may not be washable.  If the crinoline is not washable, the header of the drapery panel may sag at the top).

If the materials in the drapery panel are washable, please follow instructions regarding water temperature and spin cycle.  Also, trims and embellishments may not be washable or colorfast.  Be sure not to overload the washer and to rinse thoroughly.  If your draperies are too large for your washer, you may want to consider having a professional clean them.

Drying
Remove draperies and curtains immediately for drying.  The instructions may call for tumble dry on low or to line dry.  Reattach hardware only after the curtains are completely dry.

Ironing
If necessary and recommended, you may want to iron using a low setting and press on the reverse side.  Be careful not to break stitching.

If care instructions are not available on your drapery panels or curtains, consult a professional dry cleaner.
