Electrical fires are more common than you may realize, especially during the winter season. It’s important to protect yourself and your household by understanding the various causes and taking the right preventative care. Located in Long Island City, NY, Berk Trade and Business School has been the area’s premier technical institute for over 70 years, providing a broad selection of classes to help students who wish to pursue a career in the electrical, plumbing, or automotive industries.

Below, the trade school shares a few common causes of electrical fires and the best ways to prevent them.

Electrical Fires: Causes & Prevention

1. Light Fixtures

Light fixtures are a common cause of electrical fires; however, they are also easily preventable. Never install a light bulb with a wattage that is too high for a lamp, and refrain from placing cloth or paper over a lampshade. These materials can ignite and start a fire.

2. Space Heaters

electricalWhile space heaters are convenient and portable, they are also too often the culprit behind an electrical fire. This is due to people leaving them on to close to combustible surfaces such as beds, couches, and rugs. You can take preventative care by using radiator-style heaters that diffuse heat over the entire appliance. But more importantly, never leave them close to any flammable surface.

3. Old Appliances

While you may be reluctant to throw out your ancient appliances, continuing to use them past their lifespan could cause a serious electrical fire. To prevent this, it’s important to do an inspection of your household appliances and replace any with damaged cords or past their end date.
