Driving in a vehicle with tinted windows blocks destructive UV rays and provides additional glass fortification, protecting your car’s interior from sun degradation; and that is in addition to the privacy you crave. If you live in Hawaii and are considering a car tint job, it is important to familiarize yourself with the Aloha State’s laws on the subject.

Hawaii’s Car Tint Laws

Tint Darkness

Vehicle tint darkness in Hawaii is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%), or how much visible light is allowed through tinted windows. Passenger vehicles (Sedans) in Hawaii are allotted non-reflective window tints encompassing the top 4 inches of the windshield. If the sedan in question features an AS-1 line, then the tint may not go past this line. The rest of the windshield may not be darker than 70% VLT. The front, back, side, and rear windows of a sedan must let in 35% or more of the light. Car tint darkness laws for SUVs and vans are the same regarding the windshield and front side windows. However, back side and rear windows may be as dark as the vehicle owner wishes.

Tint Reflection

car tintTinting film can feature metallic properties that reflect incoming light and subsequently reduce visible light-producing heat and glare. However, no mirrored or metallic car tints are allowed on the windshield, front side windows, and back side windows of sedans, vans, and SUVs in Hawaii. The state does not have any regulations regarding the actual hue of car window tinting products, which is ideal for those who would rather not use the standard black color.
