Before you hit the highway for that classic summer road trip, it’s imperative to check your brake pads. To help drivers stay on top of the task this season, Privitt Auto Service Center of Columbia, MO, offers some sage advice on how to determine whether you need new brake pads.

4 Signs You Need New Brake Pads

Your Vehicle Is Taking Longer To Stop

As your pads wear down, it will take longer for your vehicle to come to a full stop. This may feel like you have to “put the pedal to the metal” each time you apply the brakes. Eventually, your car’s brake pads will wear to the point where the brakes will not function, so it’s best to replace these parts immediately.

They’re Less Than ¼ Inch Thick

Your brake pads should be at least one-fourth of an inch thick. Checking this yourself is easy with most cars—just look between the spokes of your tires for the rotor. The brake pad will be sandwiched between the rotor and the metal caliper at its outer edge. You’ll have to estimate, but you should be able to gauge how much the pad has worn.

You Hear Squealing When Braking

brake padsAside from your brake light turning on, a squealing sound when stopping is the most prominent indicator you need new brake pads. When your system needs servicing, it will emit an unpleasant, high-pitched sound that will drive you straight to the auto shop.

You Hear Grinding When Braking

Alternatively, grinding when braking is another signal to watch out for. Remember your brake pad is between your car’s metal calipers and rotor. When the pads have completely worn down, there is nothing to stop these two metal pieces from grinding against each other every time the driver tries to stop. If they’re not replaced soon, you run the risk of hefty repair fees.
