While koi ponds are popular in backyard water gardens, Specialty Water Gardens & Landscapes likes to educate their customers on other options, like goldfish. They are a perfect choice for Columbia, Missouri, backyard ponds as they can withstand many months of the below-freezing temperatures for which Midwest winters are known. When you think about goldfish, you probably think of the small orange fish won as prizes at carnivals. As beautiful as these little goldfish are, there are several other equally appealing varieties, which can add to the aesthetics of your water garden.

5 Goldfish Varieties Popular for Water Gardens

1. Black Opal

The Black Opal goldfish has an elongated white or powder blue body with deep black markings. They make for a grand addition to any size backyard water garden. Very much like the Wakin, the Black Opal is one of the more popular fish for a water garden simply because of their availability. This is a very hardy breed and does well under the ice in the winter.

2. Wakin

This double-tailed goldfish is a fast swimmer with origins going back to Japan’s love of ornamental fish. It is a favorite among fish hobbyists, and they are usually a mottled orange and white, though there are some that have touches of yellow. This is the fish most commonly found in Japanese water gardens.

This fish look much like the Wakin in both color and shape but has a more ornamental double tail. These are difficult to find in the United States, but not impossible.

4. Sanke Gold

This comet-shaped goldfish features a white body mottled with red and black markings suggesting a cross between the Wakin and the Black Opal, though this isn’t the case. Also having an elaborate double tail, this is a favorite fish for ponds across the country given their beauty, ease of care, and color variations.

5. Sarasa Comet

The Sarasa Comet is a single-tailed goldfish with a bright red body contrasted by soft white patches. Though this fish can become as large as just over a foot long, they will only grow as large as their environment allows. They’ll readily breed in a pond, producing about 1,000 eggs at a time.
