Knowing whether you have enough heating oil before your next delivery requires you to understand your tank’s capacity. While many modern tanks have gauges that show how much heating oil is left, some models and older units might not, which leaves many homeowners guessing. Fortunately, with a little time and some basic math, you can figure out exactly how much your tank can hold, and when you need a refill.

Determining the Size of Your Tank

If your heating oil tank is buried underground, it will likely hold either 550 or 1,000 gallons. Above-ground oil tanks, usually mounted in the backyard or behind the house, typically hold either 275 or 330 gallons. If the tank is approximately five feet long, it probably has a 275-gallon capacity, while 330-gallon tanks are usually about six feet long.

Understanding Usable Capacity Vs. True Capacity

When filling oil tanks, your delivery professional leaves “head room,” extra space that allows for easier delivery and the expansion of the fuel during cooler weather. Oil also gives off gas, so the empty space keeps the tank from becoming pressurized. For instance, a 275-gallon tank will only hold about 250 gallons.

Measuring Levels in the Tank

If you're not sure how much oil you have left, you can use a measuring stick, available at any hardware store. Based on the depth of heating oil remaining and the size of your tank, charts available online can tell you exactly how many gallons you have. However, you may want to avoid the problem and sign up for regular heating oil deliveries.
