If you’re having trouble getting or keeping an erection, ejaculating, or getting aroused by your partner, you may be suffering from erectile dysfunction. Your symptoms could be caused by an underlying medical condition, so it’s vital that you see a urology specialist as soon as possible.

5 Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

1. Heart Disease/High Blood Pressure

High-Point-Erectile-DysfunctionErectile dysfunction can be caused by heart disease, clogged blood vessels, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. If you suspect that cholesterol or blood pressure is contributing to your impotence, see a doctor.

2. Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate are common causes of erectile dysfunction. Visit your physician for regular prostate checks and ask your doctor if one of these conditions could be the reason you’re impotent.

3. Diabetes

High or low blood sugar can also make it difficult to get or keep an erection. If you have diabetes and erectile dysfunction, talk to your specialist so you can revisit how you’re managing your condition. A blood test can also rule out conditions such as diabetes as a source of your erectile problems.

4. Prescription Medications

Certain prescriptions such as diuretics, high blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antihistamines, and muscle relaxants can cause erectile dysfunction. If you’re taking any of these medications, talk to your doctor to see if you can make a change to your prescription regimen. Remember, never reduce or stop taking any prescribed medicine without talking to your doctor first.

5. Tobacco/Alcohol Use

Alcohol and tobacco can cause problems with erections or arousal. Avoid mind and body altering substances to keep impotence at bay. If you think smoking or drinking may be causing your erectile dysfunction, visit your doctor.
