If your siding color is showing its age or you’ve grown tired of its hue, you may be wondering what can be done. Many homeowners don’t realize they have options other than panel replacement. But in fact, with the right products and technique, it’s possible to paint siding with beautiful, long-lasting results. Harbour Painting has served the New London County, CT, area since 1977. Their team of expert exterior painters is adept at painting all types of surfaces. Here, they explain the three steps necessary to paint siding successfully.

Paint Siding in 3 Steps

1. Clean

A clean surface is crucial to the success of any paint job. For the paint to look its best, you’ll need to remove all mildew, buildup, debris, and mold from the siding. The best way to do this is by power washing. If you’re hiring a house painter to paint the siding, ask if they offer power washing as well.

2. Prime

paint sidingPrimer is usually only necessary if the original siding color has worn away or is pitted and porous. However, if the original color has been severely damaged, priming will help the fresh paint look better and last longer. The painting contractors at Harbour Painting use Benjamin Moore Fresh Start® High-Hiding All Purpose Primer or Fresh Start® Multi-Purpose Latex Primer when they paint siding.

3. Choose Paint

Not all paints work well on vinyl. Pick a latex paint that contains acrylic and urethane resins, which adapt to vinyl’s expansions and contractions, helping the paint last longer. The contractors at Harbour Painting recommend Benjamin Moore’s Regal® Select Exterior REVIVE® for Vinyl Siding, which is available in 59 colors, including everything from light pastels to rich browns and dark grays.
