How the Timing Belt Works

When the engine's cylinders ignite, it causes the pistons to extend from the cylinder, one after the other. The pistons turn the crankshaft, which provides the car with forward motion. The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, which opens and closes the valves that control the amount of fuel and air mixture that enters the firing chamber. The camshaft also opens and closes the valves that allow exhaust to escape. Thus, the crankshaft and camshaft must be timed to operate in synchronization, or the fuel mix won't enter the chamber at the right moment, and the exhaust gases won't be able to leave.
