The timing belt (or timing chain) is a crucial part of internal combustion engines. It connects the engine's crankshaft and camshaft so the camshaft can open the correct valves on time as the engine's cylinders fire. Timing belt issues require the help of a skilled auto repair facility, such as Dee's Auto Care Specialists, with locations in LaCrosse and Onalaska, WI, and Winona, MN.

How the Timing Belt WorksTiming belt in WI and MN

When the engine's cylinders ignite, it causes the pistons to extend from the cylinder, one after the other. The pistons turn the crankshaft, which provides the car with forward motion. The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, which opens and closes the valves that control the amount of fuel and air mixture that enters the firing chamber. The camshaft also opens and closes the valves that allow exhaust to escape. Thus, the crankshaft and camshaft must be timed to operate in synchronization, or the fuel mix won't enter the chamber at the right moment, and the exhaust gases won't be able to leave.

Timing Belt Problems & Consequences

If you hear a ticking sound from the engine or notice misfiring and oil leaking from the front of the engine, it could indicate a failing timing belt. If the belt breaks, the engine will be unable to turn over, and the car won't operate. If the belt breaks while the engine is running, it could cause damage to the rocker arms, push rods, valves, crank bearings, and oil pump. It could even lead to catastrophic engine failure.
