In an ideal world, everyone would abide by a rigorous daily regimen of brushing and flossing. But, realistically, tooth decay and accidents happen. When they do, dental bridges offer both a functional and cosmetic fix to restore your radiant smile. Here, the experienced dentists at Jeanne Rowland DDS., in Milton, WI, share their wisdom on dental bridges.

A Guide to Dental Bridges

What Are Dental Bridges?Dental-Bridges

As an affordable and popular treatment for missing teeth, a dental bridge fills in a gap using one or more artificial teeth or dental implants. While some are made of gold or silver amalgam, porcelain is the most commonly used material, as it closely resembles natural teeth.

How Are Bridges Attached?

There are two methods that are typically employed to attach bridges. In one procedure, the dentist secures crowns to both teeth on either side of the gap; this anchors the bridge that fills the empty space in between. The second method involves surgically implanting titanium posts into the patient’s jawbone, to which the crowns are then attached. This latter one is also the more stable treatment of the two for securing bridges.

What Is the Best Way to Care for Dental Bridges?

Unlike dentures, bridges cannot be removed by the patient, so it’s important to follow a strict oral hygiene regimen to keep them clean. In addition to daily rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash, speak to your dentist about the specialized brushes and floss that help to remove plaque and bacteria build up under the bridge.
