Your Guide to Headstone Creation

History

In ancient times, headstones were often nothing more than a pile of rocks. By the 1650s, they began to look more like those you see today. They were typically made of slate, simple in shape, and engraved with the deceased’s name and date of birth and death. By the mid-19th century, marble became one of the most popular headstone materials, although around 1940, granite would take the lead. Today, granite remains the leading headstone material, in part due to its brilliant appearance and enduring quality.

Construction

headstonesThe creation of a headstone typically begins with a worker, a pneumatic drill, and a stone quarry. The drill must dig holes at least 20 feet deep into the stone, about one inch apart. Using steel teeth, drill bits must gradually be added to penetrate deep into the rock’s core. The blocks will then go to a manufacturing house, where they will be divided into smaller sizes.

The headstone will then be carefully carved with a specific shape, size, and design in mind. There are endless options to choose from, including classic designs like half-round or square tops, gothic-style ones with pointed edges, or even crosses and hearts. Of course, these shapes are completely customizable, which adds both beauty and personality to each stone. Afterward, the headstone will be polished until it gleams.

Engraving

Before engraving, the headstone will need to be covered in liquid glue topped with a rubber stencil. A carbon layout of the epitaph will be placed on top of the granite, and the engraver will carefully etch the words. In some cases, the loved ones of the deceased may also choose a simple design or quote to include on the headstone.
